Department of Defense: National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

The U.S. Departement of Defense National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG) was established in 1989 by direction of the U.S. Congress and sponsored by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force. The program is competitive and awarded to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a doctoral degree aligned to the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development at a U.S. institution of their choice.

Award: The NDSEG fellowship will pay full tuition and required fees (excluding room and board). The monthly stipend is $3,600 ($43,200 annually) for fellowship tenure. The NDSEG fellowship will pay for the minimum health insurance coverage offered through the institution or if the institution requires health insurance coverage but does not offer it, the fellow may purchase private insurance up to a total value of $1,600.

Eligibility:  

  1. Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. dual Citizen, or U.S. national
  2. Have completed your undergraduate studies prior to the commencement of the fellowship
  3. Be applying to, accepted to, or currently enrolled at an accredited graduate-level institution within the United States
  4. Have at least three remaining years in your graduate degree program
  5. Be pursuing research in alignment with one or more specific topics identified in the Department of Defense's Broad Agency Announcements
